Custom popcorn boxes: a practical guide
Custom popcorn boxes with your logo: sizes, how many to order, lead times, how to prepare the artwork and options for small runs.
A popcorn box spends about ten minutes in each guest’s hand. In that time it gets looked at, photographed and carried all over the event. That is why custom popcorn boxes are one of the best-value branding items around: people actually use them. In this guide we cover the sizes available, how many to order, how far ahead and how to prepare the artwork so there are no surprises.
Box, cone or bag: which format to choose
Before talking about design, you need to choose the packaging. Each one has its moment.
- Cardboard box. The most recognisable, the classic cinema box. It stands up on its own, offers four sides to print and survives being carried around. The default choice for conferences and trade shows.
- Cone. Lighter and quicker to serve. Takes up less storage space and looks great at weddings and outdoor parties. The print area is smaller.
- Paper bag. Handy when people take the popcorn away for later, for example as they leave an event.
Standard box sizes
We work with two standard box sizes, plus a larger self-assembly box:
- Standard box: 12.5 cm tall with a 5.3 x 5.3 cm base. It holds the roughly 45 g portion we serve by default. Ideal for events where people eat standing up and keep moving.
- Large box: 20 cm tall with an 8.5 x 8.5 cm base. The generous, cinema-style portion. With this size the cart serves half as many boxes in the same time.
- Self-assembly box: 14.3 cm tall with a 10.2 x 10.2 cm base, in 255 g board printed in full colour on one side. It folds up in seconds and has a bigger front panel for your logo.
If in doubt, the standard box works best at trade shows and conferences: it is quick to serve, nothing goes to waste and it leaves a hand free for a badge or phone. To work out how many portions you need, see how much popcorn per person.
How many boxes to order
The basic rule
Allow one box per attendee and add a 10% margin for seconds, damage and set-up. For multi-day events, calculate per day rather than per unique attendee: many people come back every day.
Minimum print runs
Full-colour printing on custom boxes usually starts at runs of around 1,000 units. Below that, the cost per box shoots up. And at the printer’s, going from 1,000 to 2,000 boxes adds far less than the first run, so if you have several events a year it pays to order in one go and store the rest.
If you only need a few
For small events there are options with no minimum run:
- Plain box with a round logo sticker. Quick and affordable.
- Plain cone with a printed band or a stamp.
- Brand only the cart and serve in standard boxes. The brand shows up in photos, even if it doesn’t travel round the venue.
Lead times: how far ahead to order
Branding needs time for design, approval, printing and delivery. To be safe:
- At least two weeks before the event if boxes or packaging need customising.
- One working week to print the cart panels.
- More time in peak season (spring, autumn shows and Christmas), when printers are busy.
Express printing exists, but it makes the run more expensive. If you have a date, ask for a quote before the artwork is final: that way we can hold the slot.
How to prepare the artwork
The file
- Vector logo (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG). A JPG taken from your website will look pixelated.
- CMYK colours. If your brand uses a very specific colour, say so: board doesn’t reproduce colour the way a screen does.
- 3 mm bleed on every side, so no white edges appear after cutting.
- Use the manufacturer’s template. We send it to you for the box size you choose, with cut and fold lines marked.
What works on a popcorn box
- A big logo on the front. That is the side that appears in photos.
- A solid background colour. A white box with a small logo looks like a generic box.
- A short message on the side. The campaign line, the event hashtag or your stand number.
- A QR code on the back, at least 2 cm square and with good contrast. Test it in print before approving.
- Nothing important at the top. That is the part that gets folded, greasy and crumpled.
What to avoid
- Small or long text: nobody reads a paragraph on a box.
- Metallic inks and special finishes if time is short: they lengthen production.
- Printing on the inside: there is no need, and the inner face must be food-safe.
Match the box with the cart
A branded box looks even better if the cart is branded too. Our popcorn cart takes 3 mm Forex PVC panels printed in full colour on the cart and on the machine’s glass. The XXL popcorn wagon offers more surface: sides, front and canopy.
If there are more carts at the event, keep the same look. For example, the soft-serve ice cream cart can use custom 70 x 41 mm tubs, with a minimum of 1,000 units. Together it reads as a campaign, not a collection of bits.
On our custom popcorn boxes page you will find design examples and everything we can print.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom boxes?
Custom printing usually starts at around 1,000 units. For smaller quantities, the most practical option is a plain box with a logo sticker.
Can I supply my own boxes?
Yes, as long as they are food-safe and a size that works with the service. Let us know beforehand so the operator knows how many portions each batch will fill.
Can you help with the design?
We send you the template for your chosen size and check your file before printing. If you don’t have a designer, ask us when you request a quote.
